Weaves
Album · Alternative · 2016
Punky, surrealistic confections from the self-described “bent pop” quartet. Following the crooked path of bands like The B-52’s (“Human”) and Pixies (“Two Oceans”), Weaves is a friendly but decisively weird album that recalls the imaginative ideals of early New Wave: Pop songwriting as seen through an extra-terrestrial's goggles. Fascinating in high gear (listen to the jittery, first-love-buzz of “Coo Coo”), the band is just as interesting when they downshift, like on the ballad “Eagle,” which recalls the sneaky romance of '90s indie rock bands like Pavement and Helium.
