Drip Crimson
Album · R&B/Soul · 2017
Drip Crimson opens with a sample from 2004’s The Stepford Wives remake: a chirpy Christopher Walken explaining the process of transforming a “gloomy, unsatisfied woman” into the “ideal Stepford wife”. The gender-focused subject matter sets the tone for Villette’s mixtape, a collection of slinky personal musings, conceptually structured to follow a woman’s experiences in a destructive relationship. From the blind devotion of the melodic “Missed Call” through to the self-revelatory “Bag of Bones”, the Auckland artist balances delicate electro-R&B production and flickering beats beneath graceful melodies and intimate, striking lyricism.
