These 17 fantasias and two pavans whisk us back to the first half of the 17th century, revealing music of subtlety, extraordinary invention and an abundance of melody. Played by four viols (treble, two tenors and a bass), this has all the power of a 19th-century string quartet. Fretwork are magnificent in this repertoire and provide a feast of superb musicianship, getting under the skin of John Jenkins, a man who stayed away from London and the machinations of the Court to simply write gorgeous music.
