Canção - Music from the Iberian Peninsula
Album · Classical · 2018
The rich musical heritage of Spain and Portugal is celebrated with pieces drawn from the 15th century to the present day. Many of the works were originally composed for other forces before their transformation for recorder quartet, including Carreira’s spirited four-part song Canção, the ancient Sumens illud ave by Escobar and contemporary composer Toek Numan’s feverish Vientos Ibéricos, inspired by traditional Portuguese fado music. Terrific Dutch ensemble Brisk brilliantly evoke the intensity of fado’s guitar and vocals with snappy articulation and percussion effects, but they really come into their own with seductive arrangements of Renaissance choral works by Cabezón and Victoria.
