For their 13th full-length of new material, Finnish folk-metal troupe Amorphis have written a vivid, cinematic concept album about the rise and fall of civilisation. Medieval melodies mingle with dramatic accompaniment from an orchestra and choir throughout as frontman Tomi Joutsen shows off his impressive vocal range. “The Bee” comes alive with space-age synth bursts, while guest vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen (ex-The Gathering) sings a dazzling duet with Joutsen on “Amongst Stars” and Shining saxophonist Jørgen Munkeby lends sultry panache to “Daughter of Hate”.
