Mystery has shrouded Virgo, a.k.a. Virgo Four, since the '80s, in part because another Chicago house producer, Marshall Jefferson, also used the name. Merwyn Sanders and Eric Lewis' debut album shares their peer's crisp drum machines and minimalist synth melodies, but it evokes an unusually eerie fragility. Behind the sweet chords of "Do You Know Who You Are?" lurks a chilly unease; the dissonance of "In a Vision" tingles numbly. And "Going Thru Life" is a misty-eyed pinnacle of early deep house. Virgo is a melancholy and meditative benchmark for the emotive Chicago sound.
