On his second album as Crooked Man, Sheffield’s Richard Barratt—perhaps best-known as one half of Sweet Exorcist, an early signing to Warp Records—continues with the soulfully quirky house of his 2016 self-titled debut. It’s a boisterous affair, full of thundering keys, full-throated diva vocals and throbbing basslines capable of reducing subwoofers to puddles. “Walls” translates the low-end pressure of Barratt’s bleep ’n’ bass origins to a piano-house anthem whose bellowing vocals evoke the lush dance classics of The Paradise Garage. “Turnaround”, another peak-time highlight, runs hypnotic vocal loops over bright chord stabs and depth-charge plunges. But he doesn’t stop with house and disco: The album’s silky electro-pop bookends marry shimmering vocals and ambient atmospheres to earthshaking bass.
