On this collection of covers, Susan Tedeschi pivots away from strapping blues rock to explore an intimate mix of soul, gospel and roots rock. It’s a fantastic showcase for her warmth and versatility. She transforms the Stones’ rickety country shuffle “You Got the Silver” into a swelling expression of love, while on the classic ballad “Sweet Forgiveness", she reveals all new shades of tenderness in the lyrics. Maybe the most touching is Tedeschi’s spiritual rendition of Dylan’s “Lord Protect My Child", which is sure to leave any parent within earshot teary-eyed.
