Super Saiyan
Album · Hip-Hop/Rap · 2019
Detroit’s rapping, producing multi-talent Damjonboi dumps another tank of gas into the engine driving his town’s ascent to the most exciting scene in hip-hop. Super Saiyan tails his 10-pack The Number 20 from March, which featured the city-centric standout “Capers". Damjonboi brutalises speakers with his own production, and gets help from Helluva Beats (Tee Grizzley) and Von Jose (Sada Baby) to declare his dominance on tracks like “Dirt Ball” (“While you n****s offbeat I was in Off-White”). Across the tape, he crafts a fortress of prickly wordplay to match the highlight-reel-ready instrumentals, whose downbeats would sync remarkably well with alley-oops or slow-mo crossovers. If Damjonboi is Goku, his guests—namely, Shaboo, Rio da Young Og and Fettie—play like Krillin, Trunks and Vegeta, demolishing their feature verses (“I’m in Truth throwing dough up like I’m making pizza,” spits Rio on “Devils Night”). Thanks to Damjonboi’s acumen, Super Saiyan blows another hole through the quickly deteriorating wall barricading Detroit’s singular style of rap from the rest of the world.
