Listen to Mi Expediente by Jesús Chairez

Mi Expediente
Album · Regional Mexican · 2019
A little familiarity with the history of drug cartels in Mexico goes a long way when listening to Jesús Chairez’s music. For his follow-up to 2017’s Éxitos Acusticos, he sings rousing corridos in tribute to some of the most notable members of the country’s criminal enterprise. The continued notoriety of those fallen and departed makes the romanticism on display here that much more subversive. While “El Gallero” cites El Mencho’s death-defying survival in Jalisco in the face of Black Hawk helicopters, “El Sombrero No Se Cae” offers up a respectful nod to Joaquín, aka El Chapo. Chairez also salutes one of Chapo's fearsome loyal assassins on the album highlight “Yo Fui El Elegante”, with the big brass of Colmillo Norteño at his side.
