Perhaps the most eccentric solo debut ever by a famous band member, this was released during Nesmith's Monkees tenure, and while most of the compositions were cut by The Monkees at some point, here they're presented in instrumental versions with massive orchestral/big-band arrangements. The thrillingly leftfield results are somewhere between The Beach Boys' Smile and the L.A. instrumental pop of Herb Alpert. Tracks like "You Told Me" combine smooth, romantic melodies with quirky detours, while madcap cuts like "Don't Cry Now" blend banjo, brassy pop and sneaky avant-garde touches.
