Please, Get Home Safe. - EP
Album · Hip-Hop/Rap · 2020
Western Sydney’s Kwame is an MC on the up. From getting his break freestyling on stage with A$AP Ferg in Sydney to opening Splendour in the Grass after winning a triple j competition, the Auckland-born rapper seems to make great strides forward with everything he does. Following two EPs, 2017’s Lesson Learned and 2018’s Endless Conversations., what’s most striking about Please, Get Home Safe. is the range of styles on offer in just a half dozen tracks. “STOP KNOCKIN’ @ MY DOOR!” has a classic early-’90s feel, and is built around a sample of the Ann Peebles track “Trouble, Heartaches and Sadness” that’s used so inventively, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a J Dilla production. “AIN’T SO”, featuring Arno Faraji, is more aggressive, with hints of a London sound, and there are nods to horrorcore on “TOMMY’S IN TROUBLE”, featuring Phil Fresh, a cut that looks to offer a voice for the oppressed. “GLORY” would be at home on Stormzy’s Gang Signs & Prayer. It’s a sensitive, gospel-tinged ballad that recalls artists such as Khalid or HONNE.
