Showcasing a spirited cross-section of multicultural influences, Melbourne’s Ausecuma Beats draw on the musical traditions of Gambia, Mali, Senegal, Cuba and Australia, among others. They’ve become perennial festival favourites thanks to their deep, rewarding grooves and open-ended jams. Both are on full display across the ensemble’s second album, an extended celebration brimming with guitar, bass, drums, congas, tenor sax and West African instruments like the kora, djembe and balafon. Vocalist Boubacar Gaye is a warm master of ceremonies on the bustling opener “Sallier” and on “Tombo”, a personal tribute to his former teacher in Senegal. The thrill of listening to Ausecuma Beats is in following the way different vibrant motifs are always moving in and out of central focus, whether melodically or rhythmically. Jazz fans will appreciate that intricacy, especially when Lush Life bassist Horatio Luna guests on the free-flowing “Bala”.
