During the uncertain days of the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, country veteran Felicity Urquhart and The Waifs co-founder Josh Cunningham each took part in a challenge to craft a new song every week. Inspired by the experience, they decided to try their hand at writing together. The result is this richly varied record of duets, which range from dusky Americana to light-hearted classic country. “Spare Parts” very much falls into the latter camp, with its jaunty chords and vocal parts evoking a Grand Ole Opry standard, while the lyrics have winking fun using automobile components as metaphors for what needs work in a relationship. Speaking of: The pair wound up falling in love during the process of penning these tunes, adding one more layer of charm to the team-up. Their collaboration has continued with the Golden Guitar-nominated 2022 single “Bogswamp” and Urquhart’s 2023 album Birdsong. And considering that Cunningham plays bass and writes many songs in The Waifs but doesn’t often sing lead in that band, The Song Club is a relatively rare chance to hear him on the mic. A firm case in point is “Open Sea”, a tender track in which Urquhart doesn’t join him until after a full minute goes by.
