Nairobi-based singer-songwriter Karun weaves soulful R&B vocals and pop songwriting over eclectic soundbeds, and for our Apple Music Home Sessions series—in which we ask artists to record stripped-back versions of their biggest hits, alongside a cover of one of their favourite songs—she leans into the raw, meditative and borderless sounds she’s become known for. Here she offers fresh takes on “Pen & Paper, “Here With Me” and “Lie To me”, plus a cover of Kelis and André 3000’s “Millionaire”. “The pandemic was a very therapeutic time for me as an artist,” Karun tells Apple Music.” It taught me that in my big age, I can still be anything I want to be if I put my mind to it. Just like all of us, I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands, and I used some of this time to teach myself all sorts of crafts and things like website design, digital illustration, and more. This freedom and new found skills re-invigorated my songwriting and put me on a new path, and I feel like my music career jump started in a totally new direction because of it. This period has allowed me to view my art in a bigger way, and I’ve taken control of my art and taken myself out of the box I found myself in. I feel much more liberated as an artist now.”
