Fusing pop and folk takes a deft hand but singer-songwriter Simran Choudhary has a clear knack for it. The Punjabi artist joins forces with producer Aden and lyricist Raja on her EP Folkin Rani, a six-track exploration of issues affecting women, buoyed by her lilting vocals over folk-pop melodies. The centrepiece is the haunting yet groovy “Aa Gya Ni” and its version 2.0 but the opening, insistent “Mahiya Mannda Nahi” also shines. Choudhary tells Apple Music that the latter song concerns a woman “cribbing about how her partner doesn’t listen to her”. Scenarios like this pervade an EP that’s bound to provoke some serious conversation.
