For the better part of a decade now, Grupo Marca Registrada have been one of the most compelling bands in música mexicana, their norteño flair and penchant for corridos on full display all the while. A largely collaborative endeavor from the Culiacán-based act, THE GOAT boldly follows their impressive 2023 pairing of Corleone and the feature-packed Don’t Stop the Magic. Leader Fidel Castro works well with guests like Oslin Romero on “Dolerá” and Octavio Cuadras on “Noches De Cita” just as much as he does with Novillos de la Sierra on the accordion-led “El Primo”. Standout singer-songwriter Angel Cervantes steps in to duet on two self-penned songs, the cinematic “Arriba Mi Culiacán” and “La Sandía”. As riveting as these acoustic cuts may be, the unabashed trap of “Intro: THE GOAT” and the irresistibly club-centric “Torai” gleefully deviate from the format and remind that genre can’t contain their creativity.
