If It Was You is Tegan and Sara's first classic album, full of pop-punk gems with a sweet-tooth bite. They dial back the gruff intonation of their first two records, and find an understated yet anthemic power in their complementary voices: “Time Running” and the New Wave-y “I Hear Noises” deserve to be shouted to the rafters, while they can turn lovelorn yearning into both cathartic ragers (“You Went Away”, “City Girl”) and unconventional ballads (“Terrible Storm”, “Don't Confess”). These are songs for the ages.
