Will Oldham, a.k.a. Bonnie “Prince” Billy, continues to confound expectations on this eclectic EP of cover songs. Aided by Greg Weeks and Meg Baird of art-folk outfit Espers, Oldham transforms R. Kelly’s R&B epic “The World’s Greatest” into a back-porch guitar strummer, while Danzig’s grinding metal anthem “Am I Demon?” gets whittled down to a searching, atmospheric ballad. That these all sound perfectly natural side by side only illustrates further what a subtly rebellious folk artist Bonnie “Prince” Billy truly is.
