Canada’s hard-rock goliaths try some new tricks on Dark Horse, taking risks to create a rejuvenated sound with the help of legendary producer Mutt Lange. The choppy, chunky opening riff of “Something In Your Mouth” provides a proper blast-off, with Chad Kroeger even delivering some lightning-quick rapping. “Gotta Be Somebody” enters a territory that borders on ‘80s soft-rock balladry with its heartfelt lyrics and sparkling synth break. “S.E.X.” is all post-grunge hot-bloodedness, though, with knockout hooks and wah-heavy solos.
