Lisa Mitchell’s 2009 debut album was a long time coming, despite arriving while she was still just 19. Wonder followed two EPs and an early stint on Australian Idol, showcasing the nursery-rhyme simplicity of the New South Wales teen’s singing and songwriting alike. More than that, there’s a charming giddiness here that comes with the fresh thrills of just getting started. The ARIA-nominated single “Coin Laundry” begins with plinking piano before adding drum machine and vocal loops, eventually sneaking many different DIY motifs into under three-and-a-half minutes. Even with that uncommon level of intimacy, the song went gold in Australia and introduced Mitchell’s softly dreamy coo to a national audience. But she also proved that she could project her childlike voice and even rock out a bit, thanks to the frisky jangle and piano runs on “Oh! Hark!”. With production guidance from Evermore’s Dann Hume and M.I.A. collaborator Ant Whiting, Mitchell applied whimsical touches like whistling and handclaps across the album, adding to the sense of youthful joy. After Wonder scored Mitchell the Australian Music Prize, she continued to develop her unique voice on a procession of albums that never repeated the exact same tricks—and yet always sounded like they were unfolding right there in the room with us.
