Frisell didn’t need a grand organising concept for this 2010 set—the guitarist relied on his dreamy interplay with violist Eyvind Kang and veteran drummer Rudy Royston. The trio’s fresh approach puts a new step in the title track’s familiar melody, written by Stephen Foster. Originals like “Winslow Homer” have an idiosyncratic stomp that draws from jazz as well as early folk styles, and the locomotive drive of “Better Than a Machine” proves they know how to rock.
