On album number six, Between the Buried and Me craft an audacious prog-rock opus with an eye-popping palette of inspirations. The tranquil "Goodbye to Everything" is out-of-this-world psych rock, while the sonic mélange of "Telos" flits between breakneck hardcore and cool-cat jazz, and "Astral Body" alternates metalcore growls with controlled math-rock fret-work. The record's high point, however, is the brutal "Extremophile Elite", which stitches together thrash-metal fury, cartoon-like sound effects and snake-charming blues riffage over 10 turbulent minutes.
