Weightless is a scientific exploration of music's relaxing capabilities. Over six nameless and blended tracks, Marconi Union gently move reverberant, twinkling sounds through soft banks of synths and gently pulsing heartbeat bass. They add touches like gamelan percussion—“Pt. 2”—to create a dreamlike ambient environment. And it’s far from a static experience: “Pt. 5” is awash with white noise and portentous piano chords, while “Pt. 4” throws in throbbing stabs of Fender Rhodes and light swaths of waspish feedback.
