About Alex Harvey
Artist Biography
Scottish rocker Alex Harvey was already a seasoned veteran when he formed the Sensational Alex Harvey Band in 1972. Armed with a rich musical and cultural heritage, Harvey created a unique style combining elements of heavy rock, R&B, and the British music hall. His slum-kid alter-ego "Vambo"--dressed in clown make-up and mime--beat Bowie's Ziggy Stardust to the punch. Harvey is probably best remembered, though, for two radically interpretive cover songs: a harrowing, atmospheric rendition of Jacques Brel's "Next"; and a campy, irreverent version of the Tom Jones hit "Delilah," the band's only U.K. Top 10 single. Rock & roll was robbed of one of its most flamboyant and dynamic frontmen when Harvey suffered a fatal heart attack in 1982.
