About Andy Sheppard
Artist Biography
An intriguing and versatile British saxophonist, Andy Sheppard is known for his post-bop and modern creative jazz sound. He initially emerged in the 1980s playing with progressive composer George Russell, and on projects with pianist Carla Bley. His own albums, like 1988's Andy Sheppard, 1998's Learning to Wave, and his 2009 ECM debut Movements in Colour, have found him exploring straight-ahead to fusion sounds, along with Latin and Middle Eastern traditions. He has regularly played in a trio with Bley and bassist Steve Swallow, issuing albums like 2013's Trios, 2016's Andando el Tiempo, and Bley's final album, 2020's Life Goes On. A collaboration with the Espen Eriksen trio, As Good As It Gets, arrived in 2024.
