About Bill Brewster
Artist Biography
A major asset to underground dance music, Bill Brewster is a DJ, journalist, and occasional producer. He took up DJ'ing during the late '80s, later worked for DMC (Dance Mix Club), and eventually moved from his native England to New York to run the organization's U.S. division. He operated a handful of labels -- 5XO-294, Sugar Daddy, and the U.K. arm of Twisted -- throughout the latter half of the '90s. His first commercial mix, the two-CD Praxis, was issued in 2002, and though he carried out additional sets like Spiritland: The Funk & Soul of Blue Eyed Rock, Faith Presents T.K. Disco, After Dark, and After Dark: Nightshift, his name either appeared in small print or was absent from the outside packaging. Along with writing partner Frank Broughton, Brewster has authored several books, including the indispensable Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (2000), How to DJ (Properly) (2006), and The Record Players (2012). The duo also established DJhistory.com, a source for interviews, articles, and record-collector banter. Additionally, Brewster has produced and written insightful, humor-laced liner notes for dozens of compilations, including crucial releases from labels like Débutante, Ministry of Sound, Harmless, Azuli, and Strut. ~ Andy Kellman
