About Billy Currington
Artist Biography
If ever there was a country singer who prefers flip-flops to cowboy boots, it’s Billy Currington. Born and raised on the Georgia coast, just outside of Savannah, the singer and avid surfer creates country music that is warm and relaxed like the ocean breezes gliding across his beloved beach house on Tybee Island. Landing a deal with Mercury Records Nashville in 2003, the upstart benefited from some good timing: early hits like “Must Be Doin’ Somethin’ Right” and “Good Directions”, platinum blockbusters in 2005 and 2006, arrived at a time when Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton and other country stars were notching their own Jimmy Buffett-inspired hits steeped in Southern beach life. And just like the quirky crooner famous for “Margaritaville”, Currington excels at lighthearted anthems (see 2010’s “Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer”) that champion the virtues of taking it easy over working hard. Another key quality to Currington’s music—and this may be the singer’s most unique flavour—is his knack for dipping into R&B. Ever since his teens, he’s included a cover of the Marvin Gaye classic “Let’s Get It On” in his live sets; these sexy vibes spill over into his most daring recordings. “Don’t It”, one of three U.S. country-airplay chart-toppers from the mid-2010s album Summer Forever, features the same silky wah-wah heard on Gaye’s ’70s work. And then there’s 2018’s “Bring It on Over”, on which Currington’s deep, supple voice glides across a disco-funk groove that, while capable of getting bodies on the dance floor, retains the mellow feel that has defined the beach lover’s career.
