About Cat Janice
Artist Biography
Before her passing in 2024, Cat Janice's personal expressions of love and resilience in the face of tragedy helped her make a lasting impression on listeners. Born in 1993, the singer and songwriter otherwise known as Catherine Janice Ispan studied violin and piano while growing up in the Washington, D.C. area. After exploring jazz and rock during her early musical forays, Janice shifted toward the dreamy brand of dance pop she showcased on singles like 2021's "White Shoes". When she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2022, Janice began documenting her experience in social media posts and exploring it in her music. On her 2023 album, Modern Medicine, she countered the tough reality of her medical situation with the effervescence and humour that fill songs like "Chill the fck out". Released shortly before Janice's death in February 2024, "Dance You Outta My Head" became a viral hit thanks to its irrepressible energy and Janice's determination to express her joy even when "dancing on the edge of disaster", as she put it in one of many lyrics that inevitably sound bittersweet.
