About Errol Walker
Artist Biography
b. Earl George Walker, 15 July 1948, Trench Town, Jamaica, West Indies. Walker learned his craft through Studio One legends such as Lennie Hibbert, Ernest Ranglin and Tommy McCook. His earliest performance was in 1962 when he performed as one half of a short-lived duo alongside Barrington Daley. His inauguration proved beneficial and led to him joining Earl Lindo, Carlton ‘Santa’ Davis and Richard Daley in the Graduates although each member found greater success in later projects. By the early 70s Walker had reunited with Barrington Daley in the Gatherers, alongside Anthony ‘Sangie’ Davis. The group attended various auditions and recorded their debut, ‘Right Now’, in 1972. Jimmy Radway produced the song, which at the time remained on a master tape. Undeterred by the initial setback the group approached Lee Perry who was suitably impressed and produced the group’s tour de force, ‘Words Of My Mouth’. The song was an instant hit but the follow-up, ‘Start Over’, failed to match its predecessor. When the Gatherers disbanded Walker became involved in session work notably at Studio One where he worked alongside Dennis Brown and Freddie McGregor. In addition to session work Walker joined Boris Gardiner’s Happening Band as a vocalist where he remained until the mid-70s. In 1977 he was reunited with Lee Perry who recorded and released ‘Better Future’. His solo debut was not particularly successful in Jamaica although he made a significant impression on international reggae charts. Walker also recorded, ‘John Public’, ‘In These Times’ and a version of ‘Summertime’, although it was not until the phenomenal interest in Perry’s back catalogue that these tracks became widely available. In 1978 Walker provided lead vocals alongside Phil Callender in the short-lived In Crowd. While his output has been minimal Walker is held in high esteem for his contribution to numerous Jamaican classic songs.
