Artist Biography
This contemporary singer-songwriter and pianist came to prominence in London, England in the late 90s when her first widely available recording, Alternative Therapy, attracted a good deal of attention. Kokot has a dramatic repertoire that draws upon African music, contemporary jazz styles and world music, much of it original songs for which she writes both words and music. In the early 00s, after a two-year sabbatical, she was again active in London where she formed a trio with Gene Calderazzo (drums) and Yaron Stavi (bass). The new group, Ungawa, plays a mix of original compositions and jazz, including new arrangements of classic pieces associated with musicians such as Wayne Shorter and Miles Davis, among them ‘Footprints’ and ‘So What’. Powerful and passionate in her writing, playing and singing, Kokot is a vibrant and original musician. Much of her singing is concentrated in mid-range and has a strong, earthy sound. Her piano playing is contemporary but often display echoes of the blues. In addition to acoustic and electric piano, she also plays Hammond organ.
