About Jēkabs Jančevskis
Artist Biography
Composer Jēkabs Jančevskis came on the scene in the late 2010s with several choral compositions. His work has attracted attention both in Latvia and beyond.
Jančevskis was born in Riga, Latvia, on April 18, 1992. His mother is a noted actress, Zane Jančevska. As a child, he appeared in several plays and films. Jančevskis studied at the French Lyceum in Riga but also took music classes at the Riga First Music School in both conducting and composition. He also plays piano and won second prizes in 2004 and 2009 at the International Competition of Young Pianists in Valmiera, Latvia. In 2008, he enrolled at the Riga Cathedral Choir School, also taking composition classes with Ēriks Ešenvalds and Pauls Dambis on the side. After graduating in 2012, Jančevskis matriculated at the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music, studying composition with Selga Mence, and went on for a master's degree in composition, working in that field with Janis Petraskevics.
Jančevskis became the conductor of the choir Anima Mea and has taught composition at the Riga Cathedral Choir School, also serving as the artistic director of the Pavuls Jurjans Music School Symphony Orchestra. A breakthrough came in 2019 when Jančevskis' composition When earned the main prize at the UNESCO International Exhibition of New Works of Young Composers in Argentina in the Rostrum category for composers under 30. His works have been performed by the Latvian Radio Choir, the State Academic Choir Latvia, the Ave Sol Chamber Choir, as well as by several youth choirs. Many of his choral works are quite spiritual in nature, but he has also written such crowd-pleasers as the orchestral Crazy Days, which sarcastically depicts the madness of Christmas shopping. In 2020, he issued an album of his works with Jurgis Cabulis conducting the Mixed Choir of the Riga Cathedral Choir School on the Hyperion label, bringing him new recognition beyond Latvia and the Baltics. ~ James Manheim
