About Jesse Garon & The Desperadoes
Artist Biography
This Edinburgh-based act emerged in 1986. Initially viewed as an informal venture - its founding line-up was largely drawn from members of another group, Rote Kopelle - the Desperadoes nonetheless established themselves as the leading exponents of the city’s ‘shambling’ scene, alongside the more fêted Shop Assistants. Fran Schoppler (vocals) Andrew Tully (guitar/vocals), Angus McPake (bass) and Marquerita Vazquez Ponte (drums) provided the core of a unit that made its debut with the melodic ‘Splashing Along’, a single sympathetically produced by ex-Jesus And Mary Chain bass player Douglas Hart. The Desperadoes’ deft blend of charm and melancholia was captured on a series of excellent singles, including ‘The Rain Fell Down’ and ‘And If The Sky Should Fall’, although their lone album, Nixon, revealed a more forthright perspective. The Desperadoes split up at the end of the decade, unable to fully exploit their substantial early promise.
