About Jubileers
Artist Biography
The Jubileers -- one of the first gospel recording groups to begin moving large amounts of sides -- were led by the talented Richard Huey, who later became a Broadway performer. The group was in its heyday during the Second World War years, promoted alongside popular blues and jazz artists such as Champion Jack Dupree and Coleman Hawkins. The Jubileers also came up with material that sounds a bit like rockabilly and R&B: tracks by the group show up on compilations geared for the Saturday night dance crowd as well as Sunday morning worshipers.
Hits by the Jubileers included such good advice as "Keep Out of the Sinner`s Way," the typical demand to "Give Me That Old Time Religion," the remarkable "Daniel Was a Witness for My Lord," and the one and only "Jesus," which doesn't mince words at all. Meanwhile, the popularity of secular singing groups certainly reached Huey's ears during the '40s. He took the Jubileers in the same direction, cutting downright suggestive material for Bluebird such as "Boogie Woogie Johnson" and "The Right String But the Wrong Yo-Yo." ~ Eugene Chadbourne
