About Kenny Cox
Artist Biography
Detroit native Kenn Cox was a jazz pianist, composer, bandleader, instructor, and culture worker. His name is synonymous with the Detroit jazz scene in the mid- to late 20th century. Cox was fluent in the jazz languages of bebop, hard bop, and post-bop. He led two excellent dates for Blue Note in 1968 (Introducing Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet) and 1970 (Multidirection). His Contemporary Jazz Quintet issued Location in 1973, Strata Records' first release. During the '80s, Cox led the Guerilla Jam Band and did session work. He collaborated with saxophonist Donald Walden on Focus: The Music of Tadd Dameron in 2003 and played with saxophonist James Carter on 2004's Live at Baker's Keyboard Lounge. In 2006, he founded Kenn Cox and Drum. His Strata and Blue Note titles -- including the previously thought lost 1974 unreleased offering Clap Clap! The Joyful Noise, have been reissued several times.
