b. New Zealand. Regarded as one of his continent’s leading guitarists, Borich came to prominence in Australia with the New Zealand band La De Das in 1976. After a tour of the UK in 1980, several members left, leaving Borich as lead guitarist in a trio that he eventually renamed the Kevin Borich Express. The Express earned a reputation as one of the hardest-working groups in the country, touring and playing incessantly. His style was influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower, though his guitar work often overshadowed his ordinary vocals and songwriting. On album, his talents were not adequately explored, although his guitar playing on the La De Das’ version of ‘All Along the Watchtower’ was exemplary. An involvement with the hugely popular Party Boys cover band led to the dissolution of his band in 1983.
