About Little Buddy Doyle
Artist Biography
No biographical details are available for Doyle, an obscure, impoverished, blind American street blues singer who, as his name implies, was also a dwarf. He was thought to have been born in Memphis, perhaps at the turn of the twentieth century and recorded 10 tracks there for Columbia Records in July 1939, which were to be a major influence on Detroit bluesman Baby Boy Warren. Other Memphis-based musicians such as Walter Horton, Will Shade and Furry Lewis claimed to have worked with Doyle; indeed, Shade and Horton have both professed to be the harmonica player on the 1939 recordings. Informants report that Doyle probably died in early 1940 but this has never been confirmed.
