About Matthew W. Noonan
Artist Biography
In the artist’s words:
Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. As a young child, I could hear the different voices in Bach fugues or the individual instruments in a Beethoven symphony. I started playing the piano and organ by ear so I would recreate what I heard.
What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Ton Koopman, Bach: Orgelwerke II (Organ Works II) Ton Koopman, Bach: Orgelwerke Virgil Fox, Virgil Fox: Encores I discovered both Ton Koopman and Virgil Fox at a young age. These albums were some of my favorites. With the Koopman albums, he makes the organ come alive with very basic registrations. Virgil Fox was so unique and he brought organ music to many.
Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. ““Wir gläuben all an einen Gott” in Organo pleno con Pedale, BWV 680” Bach took his faith pretty seriously. In this setting of the Creed, Bach takes something that is mundane and made it glorious. This setting is for Organo Pleno which is full organ. It is such a statement of faith and passion.
What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? It has to be my European debut in Paris in 1992 when I was 20. It was back before the internet and social media so distinguished organists in the US who heard me play called over to Paris to recommend me to perform. I’m grateful for the opportunity.
Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? There are several organ works I want to master and eventually I want to perform the complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
