Artist Biography
Founded in 2006 in Porto, the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música was established to perform Baroque and Classical music following historically informed practices on period instruments. Led by Laurence Cummings, the orchestra has performed under several guest conductors, including Rinaldo Alessandrini, Fabio Biondi, Harry Christophers, Christophe Rousset, Andreas Staier, and Masaaki Suzuki, among other leaders in the early music field, and it has accompanied many prominent soloists, including Rachel Podger, Roberta Invernizzi, Franco Fagioli, and Alina Ibragimova, as well as choirs, such as The Sixteen and the Coro Casa da Música. The orchestra has performed at music festivals in Portugal, Spain, England, and France, and given performances of Bach's Mass B Minor, the Brandenburg Concertos, the Christmas Oratorio, and works by Handel, Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, and other masters. The orchestra has also given the Portuguese premiere of Handel's Ottone and a revival of Francisco António de Almeida's L'Ippolito, first performed in Lisbon in 1752. Under Staier's direction, the orchestra released À Portuguesa: Iberian Concertos & Sonatas, a 2018 album on Harmonia Mundi. ~ Blair Sanderson
