Artist Biography
Matthew Smith began the Outrageous Cherry project in 1993 after playing in Detroit-area bands with luminaries like His Name Is Alive’s Warren DeFever. Inspired by bubblegum-pop and the proto-punk of the Stooges, the group’s earliest recordings, beginning with 1994’s self-titled EP, were also likened to the Velvet Underground’s minimalist melodies. And while they continued to be catchy, later albums like OUR LOVE WILL CHANGE THE WORLD showed a deliberate emboldening of their sound, much like fellow Detroit contemporaries the White Stripes and the Go. As they entered their 15th year of recording, Smith and Co. were still going strong on releases like 2009’s UNIVERSAL MALCONTENTS, and their influence was apparent on psych-punkers such as Awesome Color.
