About Paul Evans & The Curls
Artist Biography
b. 5 March 1958, New York City, New York, USA. Evans had two Top 10 singles in 1959/60 and wrote hits for others before going on to record country records, jingles and to write for the Broadway theatre and for film. Evans’ first successful song placement, ‘When’, was a Top 5 single for the Kalin Twins in 1958. He later wrote the first chart hit for Bobby Vinton, the number 1 ‘Roses Are Red (My Love)’, in 1962, and two songs recorded by Elvis Presley, ‘I Gotta Know’ (1960) and ‘The Next Step Is Love’ (1970). Evans’ own recording career began in 1959 with the novelty song ‘Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat’, which featured a female backing group called the Curls. Released on Guaranteed Records (as were Evans’ other three charting pop singles), it reached number 9 in 1959. The following year, ‘Happy-Go-Lucky-Me’ reached number 10.
There were two other, minor pop chart singles, but after 1960 Evans changed course in his career, recording country music. He surfaced on the country charts in 1978 with another novelty record, ‘Hello, This Is Joannie (The Telephone Answering Machine Song)’, on Spring Records, and the following year with ‘Disneyland Daddy’, also on Spring. Those and 1980’s ‘One Night Led To Two’, on Cinnamon Records, all made the lower rungs of the US country chart. He also wrote the scores for the minor film Live Young and the 1972 Broadway show Loot. Since then, Evans has been involved in singing advertising jingles.
