Artist Biography
Originally rooted in bluesy hard bop, cornetist and visual artist Rob Mazurek is an exciting improviser and conceptualist. He co-founded the Chicago Underground groups -- Duo, Trio, Quartet, and Orchestra -- as well as Exploding Star Orchestra, fusion outfit Isotope 217, and São Paulo Underground. His leader debut was 1995's Badlands with Eric Alexander, followed by provocative recordings with the Chicago Underground groups. Mazurek expanded his creative directions with 2002's solo Silver Spines, several Exploding Star Orchestra collaborations with Bill Dixon and Roscoe Mitchell, and the International Anthem dates Alternate Moon Cycles (2014) and Alien Flower Sutra (2016). 2020's acclaimed Dimensional Stardust was followed by several live archival releases on European labels. Exploding Star Orchestra issued Lightning Dreamers in April 2023, and Mazurek and Damon Locks released New Future City Radio that July.
