About Safka
Artist Biography
This folk rock duo comprises sisters Leilah (b. c.1974, USA) and Jeordie Schekeryk (b. c.1975, USA), the daughters of record producer Peter Schekeryk and the singer Melanie. The duo made their debut at the respective ages of seven and eight, when they recorded a version of ‘Grandma, We Love You’, which became a minor Canadian chart hit in 1982. Later they became backing singers on their mother’s tours, billing themselves as the Melanoids. By the time each had turned 20 they had formed Safka in Denver, Colorado, USA, the name taken from their mother’s maiden name. Influenced by 10, 000 Maniacs, Counting Crows and Melissa Etheridge, their main stock-in-trade is close harmony singing. Though writing their own material, their live sets have revisited many of their mother’s best-known compositions, including ‘Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)’ and ‘Brand New Key’. After issuing a demo tape/cassette album at the beginning of the year, the duo travelled to Europe for a three-month tour at the end of 1995 as support act to Melanie.
