About Sheb Wooley
Artist Biography
Country singer and film star Sheb Wooley moved to Los Angeles in 1949, where he signed with MGM Records and made his first movie appearance in ROCKY MOUNTAIN alongside Errol Flynn. Wooley subsequently appeared in over 30 films, including memorable appearances in the classic westerns HIGH NOON and GIANT. In 1958, his novelty song "The Purple People Eater" became a chart topping million-seller. Wooley first appeared in the US country charts in 1962 with another novelty number, "That’s My Pa." He also charted, albeit as his drunken alter ego Ben Colder, with humorous parodies of pop/country hits. Wooley passed away in 2003.
