About Stanley Greenthal
Artist Biography
b. Stanley Scott Greenthal, 16 April 1949, New York City, New York, USA. Greenthal’s family came from England around the time of the Mayflower. His father’s family originate from Alsace Lorraine; this combination probably explains his passion for the various musical styles emanating from those areas. Receiving his first guitar at the age of 14, he moved west at the age of 17. He studied English Literature at the University of Colorado, achieving a B.A. By now he was married, but two years later his wife died, and the title track of Songs For The Journey was written about the experience. The album includes two exceptional instrumentals, ‘January/After Midnight Polkas’ and ‘Still Untitled’. As well as Stanley on guitar and mandocello the album includes such respected musicians as Kevin Burke, of Patrick Street (fiddle), and Michaél Ó Dhomhnaill, of the Bothy Band and Relativity, who also produced the album. In the early 70s, Greenthal was living in southern England, and listened to Irish music a great deal. He also spent time travelling round Scotland, Ireland, Greece and Brittany, and absorbed the many musical influences inherent in the different cultures. All Roads continues the Celtic and Balkan themes in the music. Greenthal has played both coasts of the USA, and has performed with Robin Williamson.
