About Teddy Weatherford
Artist Biography
b. 11 October 1903, Pocahontas, Virginia, USA, d. 25 April 1945, Calcutta, India. While Weatherford was still a child his family moved to New Orleans where he began playing piano as a teenager. He was still in his teens when he joined the great northward migration, ending up in Chicago in 1922. During the next few years he was in much demand in the city but itchy feet took him abroad, travelling to the Far East in 1926 first as a sideman but later as a band leader. He played in Malaya, the Philippines and China from where he returned in the mid-30s just long enough to persuade Buck Clayton to take a band to Shanghai. From China, Weatherford moved to India, France, Sweden, back to India and Ceylon and then finally to India yet again where he played, mainly in Calcutta, until his death from cholera. A solid, rhythmically intense player, with a deep-rooted instinct for the blues, Weatherford’s peripatetic career makes an accurate assessment of his work difficult to determine. Reputedly, Weatherford’s time in Chicago saw him as a rival to Earl ‘Fatha’ Hines and claims are made that Hines learned from him. However, his relatively few and mostly pre-electric recordings, good as they show him to be, make it hard to justify such assertions.
