About The Bluestars
Artist Biography
For decades, this New Zealand quartet -- John Harris (vocals, lead guitar), Rick Van Bokhoven (vocals, rhythm guitar), Murray Savidan (bass, vocals), and Jim Crowley (drums) -- confused British record collectors because they managed to land a contract with England's Decca Records and get a single, "Please Be a Little Kind" b/w "I Can Take It" issued on the Sceptered Isle. This led onlookers to believe that the Bluestars were English (especially as Birmingham, England, had its own Bluestars). Actually, they hailed from Auckland, and their Decca liaison didn't last long, the London-based label deciding to pass on several subsequent efforts. The gloriously overamplified fuzz-laden punk rant "Social End Product" was one that Decca passed on, but New Zealand label Allied International did issue, and it got the Bluestars their biggest exposure ever 35 years later, when it was included on Rhino Records' Nuggets II box. ~ Bruce Eder
