About Tony Levin
Artist Biography
b. 30 January 1940, Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England, d. 3 February 2011. From an early age, Levin (not to be confused with the American bass player of the same name) lived in Birmingham, where he played drums with local bands and with visiting musicians. In the mid-60s he worked often with Tubby Hayes and shortly thereafter played with Alan Skidmore, Mike Westbrook, Mike Pyne, Humphrey Lyttelton and others. During the following decade his already contemporary inclination continued apace, with stints in bands led by Stan Sulzmann, John Surman, Michael Garrick and Ian Carr. In the 80s, he worked with Paul Dunmall and Keith Tippett and also ran his own jazz club. Later, with Dunmall, Tippett and Paul Rogers, he formed Mujician. He continued his contemporary jazz and improvised music activities in subsequent years with artists such as Rogers and Tony Oxley and the European Jazz Quartet. A strikingly gifted percussionist, Levin’s uncompromising approach to improvised music helped place him at the forefront of this movement. Tony Levin died on 3 February 2011 at the age of 71.
