Artist Biography
Tony Malaby is a deeply inquisitive, yet commanding tenor and soprano saxophonist and composer. He resonant tone and unhurried delivery make him comfortable playing straightahead or avant-garde. An integral member of N.Y.C.'s downtown scene, his 2000 leader debut Sabino wove together post-bop and folk sounds from his Mexican-American heritage. 2003's Adobe, with Paul Motian and Drew Gress, won accolades internationally. In 2005 played on Charlie Haden & the Liberation Music Orchestra's Not in Our Name. In 2007, he released Tamarindo with William Parker and Nasheet Waits. In 2017 he cut New Artifacts in performance with Mat Maneri and Daniel Levin. 2019 saw Malaby appear on no less than five albums, including the collective Zoning with Nick Fraser, Kris Davis, Ingrid Laubrock, and Lina Allemano. In 2021, Malaby, Ben Monder, and Tom Rainey issued the improvised Live at 55 Bar, and in 2022, Malaby and a reunited Sabino released The Cave of Winds.
