About Tribe 8
Artist Biography
Formed at roughly the same time as fellow Bay Area queercore revolutionaries Pansy Division, the lesbian California punkers Tribe 8 came together around snarling singer Lynn Breedlove, with Leslie Mah, Slade, Flipper, and Tantrum providing an in-your-face soundtrack of authentic L.A.-style hardcore. Much like that of their male counterparts in Pansy Division, the music was primarily a way to showcase unapologetic lyrics trumpeting their sexuality and lifestyle. Dead Kennedy’s frontman, Jello Biafra, quickly signed the band to his Alternative Tentacles label, which released three Tribe full-lengths and one EP between 1994 and 1998. The group remained active during the 2000s, while Breedlove also gained notoriety as an activist and author.
